Being Understood
I stop and face the sun bouncing over the blue spruce, the willow,
the creek with its boulders of gray granite and pebbles of celestine,
the thick green field, the lonely sidewalk edged in Creeping Jenny,
the unpruned fruit, apples and peaches. I face the warmth, letting
it penetrate and linger in my bones. The dog I walk is looking up at
me, head cocked. Now you know, his eyes say, why I sniff the air.
